John's Animated GIF File Info

I'm currently trying out animated GIF files. They have been know to crash some browsers. Those browsers that don't support animated GIF files should show a static GIF image. I'd like to get feedback from anyone about what these GIFs do on your browser. My e-mail address is john@davinci.marc.gatech.edu.

The source of information I used was Royal E. Frazier's web page at http://www.reiworld.com/royalef/gifanim.htm. This site references the GIF Construction Set by Alchemy Mindworks Inc. at http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/alchemy.html. There are Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 versions. It also works under Windows NT.

There are some tricks to getting the images to move smoothly with the GIF Construction Set. The biggest one is to make sure all images are the same size and enter this size in the image header in the construction set. Colors are another problem. The easiest way is to use the first image as the basis for the global color map. All succeeding images should then map correctly.

Here's an update: Microsoft has a free GIF Animator software at http://www.microsoft.com/imagecomposer/. The GIF Animator web page is a button to the left. The Image Composer from Microsoft, also on the web page, can be used to create a bunch of different individual GIF files for the animated GIF file.

Good luck!
