Wayne J. Book

Wayne Book is currently researching and working with students in the areas of actuation (hydraulic and electric) and control of motion systems, robot dynamics and motion planning, and haptic displays.  Much of this work is currently done in the context of the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power.  Intelligent machines can do no useful physical task without appropriate dynamic behavior, usually involving movement. By understanding the dynamics and how it can be modified with control or mechanical redesign, the envelope of feasible performance of these machines can be extended. The projects of the IMDL all fall in one or more of these categories. The students get to have most of the fun working in the lab and on theory and analysis in these projects. Wayne also teaches robotics, system dynamics, automatic controls and automation. For fun he loves to backpack, bicycle, kayak or canoe, run, and do anything else with a spirit of adventure. He advises the GT Rugby Club, serves as Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 18, and tries to keep up with Theodore (Fr. Theodore), Andrew and Rebecca (Becca), his children and Judith, his wife. Efforts to bring health and clean water to the people of Haiti are a passion and joy through a local organization, ServeHAITI.
As an important phase of his research, Dr. Book is implementing his ideas in commercial grade software licensed by Georgia Tech to the company he helped to found, CAMotion, Inc.   A spinoff company, Sentrinsic, LLC, has also commercialized work by Dr. Book and his students.
